Welcome to Australian Aquarium Magazine (AAM) eNews3

Welcome to Issue 3 of Australian Aquarium Magazine. This issue is, in my opinion, our best work yet and I’m very pleased with the content we bring to you in this magazine.

We hope by now you have become attached to this very special niche publication. We are especially chuffed by all the positive feedback we are getting.

Richmond Loh discusses algal control and gives us a quick guide to goldfish. Adrian Tappin gives us the “bow” down on archerfish and Christian Hofmann discusses algal grazing organisms in the marine aquarium. In addition, Rolly McKay discusses his views on molecular biology as it applies to transgenic Zebra Danios!

What’s New

AAM is continually improving the design and layout catering to new departments, section and styles. We are now an international magazine so we want to emphasize and show off Australian aquatic animals.
We have now included quick guides on keeping aquatic animals, not forgetting the common fish sold in stores that we all take for granted.

1,2,3 Easy – Selecting your marine fish

By Paul Talbot

Fish selection is one of the most overlooked aspects of marine fish keeping and yet it is the first step to being able to maintain an amazing marine aquarium. Some fish are very easy to keep in the environment offered in a regular marine aquarium, while other fish will require very specific conditions and will usually die if offered the same level of care. Some fish will turn your aquarium into a beautiful and peaceful biosphere while others into a chaotic boxing ring.

Ponds & Water Gardens

KOI – living art
By Bradley Bradley
Koi carp (also called nishikigoi amongst hobbyists) are the coloured ornamental variety of Cyprinus carpio, orignally developed in Japan and now spread around the world. Primarily, koi are appreciated for their colours and pattern when viewed from above.

While they can be kept in an aquarium, they really should kept in ponds, both as they are large fish that require large volumes of water and to best appreciate their colouration. Highly prized, they range from a few dollars to many thousands of dollars in price.

The Planted Aquarium

Feng Shui & Water Features

Dr. Pond – Paul Shelbourne from Water Features online explains the ancient art of Feng Shui and how best to apply it to your water garden.
“The positive flow of Chi is vital to a garden and its movement throughout should be free and uninhibited. Barriers to Chi must be removed and in cases where this is impracticable Feng Shui cures can be employed to allow for the smooth flow if Chi.“

Java Fern By David Midgley
It may sound like a bold claim, but it is simple truth: This species is the single best freshwater aquarium plant for virtually everyone with an aquarium. No other aquatic plant is as adaptable, hardy and interesting. What plant is this?
Java fern (Microsorum pteropus).
