Lake Victoria SOS
By Aline Sinclair
Lake Victoria an evolutionary giant - and then one day a few short decades ago, along came a man with a bucket. In the 1950’s the British introduced the nile perch (Latus nicloticis) into the lake as a food fish which spawned a fishing industry intended to feed a great many people in Africa. Ecologically and socio-economically devastating, the nile perch has brought about a massive transformation in the lake ecosystem and in the space of a few short decades the nile perch, a voracious predator, extinguished almost the entire stock of the endemic
haplochromine species.

My first question is better for what?” By Paul Talbot.

The Fish Vet
Dr. Richmond Loh
Fish Welfare – A topic currently being hotly debated internationally is gradually making news in Australia. This article explores the ethics towards and the welfare of fishes. In the UK, the Liverpool City Council has placed a ban on goldfish being offered as prizes at fun fairs. The Animal Welfare Bill in the UK increases the minimum age (from 12 to 16 years old) at which a child may buy an animal without a parent being present. In Rome, the authorities ban goldfish being kept in little fish bowls. They consider this is ‘cruel’. Currently, the Australian Government, through the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) is consulting with stakeholders in the aquarium industry on this issue.
